Summer begonias are ideal for the border, cascading from hanging baskets or brightening your container planting. Begonia tubers are underrated for their vibrant colors and long lasting fresh colours. With the right care they can flourish, producing a constant supply of flowers right up to the first frosts. Choose from with pendular or double begonias for different effects.

We say 'I've been planting begonias in the garden for years. I'm always impressed with the amount of the colour they bring. Their leaves are so interesting its almost growning for these alone.'

How to grow begonias

  • Choose a location with filtered sunlight or partial shade. Begonias thrive in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
  • Plant the bulbs with the indented side facing upward, burying them about 5 cm deep. Space multiple bulbs at least 20 cm apart to allow for proper growth.
  • Ensure the soil is rich in organic matter and well-draining. If your soil is heavy, consider adding compost to improve drainage.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Begonias appreciate a slightly more humid environment, making them an excellent choice for shaded areas.

How to care for begonias

  • Feed Begonias with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season.
  • Apply a layer of organic mulch around the plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
  • Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming and maintain the plant's overall appearance.
  • In colder climates, Begonia Bulbs are often treated as annuals. If you want to overwinter them, dig up the bulbs before the first frost, allow them to dry, and store them in a cool, dry place until spring.

Can Begonia Tubers be grown indoors?

Begonias can be grown indoors in containers. Choose a well-draining potting mix and place the containers in a location with bright, indirect light.

Do Begonias attract pollinators?

Yes, Begonia flowers are known to attract bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, making them a delightful addition to pollinator-friendly gardens.

How often should I water Begonia Tubers?

Water Begonias consistently to keep the soil evenly moist. Adjust the frequency based on weather conditions, ensuring the soil doesn't become waterlogged.

When is the best time to plant Begonia Tubers?

Plant Begonia Bulbs in the spring after the threat of frost has passed, providing them with ample time to establish and bloom during the growing season. You can even start them in a cold frame to help earlier blooming.
