Collerette Dahlias have a single row of flat petals which sometimes overlap; they have a collar of shorter florets which surround the center disc. The flowers of Collerette Dahlias are attractive to pollinators. With their open flowers, pollinating insects can easily reach the pollen.

What are collarette dahlias?

As the name suggests, collarette dahlias have a small collar around the center of each flower. They are an otherwise single dahlia, with contrasting ray florets often in contrasting colours. These anemone style flowers are medium sized with mid sized foliage.

Stephen says: ‘On my recent trip to the growing fields of De Zilk, the Netherlands I walked around some of the growers test beds. The collarette dahlias were planted very densely creating thick bushes of dahlias with endless stems of these subtle flowers. They were certainly a highlight of the 100s of dahlias on trial. Teesbrooke Audrey making a significant impact on me.’

Are collarette dahlias good for cutting?

You couldn't ask for more from a plant than collarette dahlias. The lightweight flowers grow on long stems to a height of 60cm and 50 cm wide on average. Cutting the flowers only encourages more flowers to grow, providing you with endless flowers from mid-summer all the way to the first frosts.

How to plant and care for collarette dahlias tubers

Collarette dahlias won't require any special treatment. Simply follow these tips to get the most out of this beautiful flower:

  • As a smaller flower, you can successfully grow a large plant with 7-9 stems without the flowers getting too heavy. However, it is always wise to support your dahlias with a mesh or stake.
  • You can plant the tubers straight in the ground in April. Many people grow them from March in greenhouses. This allows the tubers to start early and flower sooner in summer.
  • Put them in a pot just big enough for the tuber
  • Use good compost that drains well
  • Place in plenty of light but protected from frost
  • Remove from the pot and plant straight into the ground once the threat of frosts has passed
  • Provide protection from slugs for your young plants to stop them feasting on the tender, fresh shoots
  • Always remove the flowers as soon as they show signs of fading in order to promote more flower production
  • Larger dahlias will need staking.

Pinching new growth from dahlias

  • When the dahlias are around 30cm high, pinch out the growing tips to encourage the plants to branch out and produce more flowers.
  • Remove any stems that look weak. For stronger stems and longer flowering, pinch out the buds that develop in the base (axel) of the stem.
  • Dont forget to keep removing recently finished flowers
