These spectacular angelica plants offer architectural elegance to the garden. It is a "stand-out" plant with large, dome-shaped heads of dark reddish purple flowers and red tinted stems.

Angelica is a perfect perennial plant for the back of the flower border with its height and glorious red colour. It will attract bees and butterflies and is good for cutting.

What is an Angelica plants

An angelica is a is a stand-out plant with large, dome-shaped heads of dark flowers and tinted stems. A mid-sized plant with large and broad dissected leaves, similar to those of a dahlia. They act as an architectural plant for semi shaded areas. Perfect for filling a bit of space during summer. 

The flowers are semi-spherical domes sitting on top of a branched stem. Each stem grows branches with several flowers

Angelica Gigas is a perfect purple for attracting pollinators. Plus, it makes a great cut flower.

Are Angelica plants perennial?

Angelica are a hardy plant but they’re a bi-annual plant. Known as Monocarpic, once it has flowered, it dies. The first year expect just foliage, and the second year it will flower in late summer.  

Is Angelica plants edible?

Angelica is known as ‘herb of the angels’ and it's from the parsley family. It can be used to flavour drinks or add to desserts. It has long been used for it’s medicinal properties for numerous ailments, mostly digestive. However, always take caution when consuming plants and research them thoroughly. 

How to plant Angelica

  • Their preference is damp woodland in semi shade. They will grow to 90cm so give them plenty of room. You can plant them in a large border. 
  • They will like a rich soil so improve your soil with mulch or compost soil improver. 
  • Propagating its seeds is easy to do, so make sure you collect them in late autumn and plant them in spring. The seeds need light to germinate and should be kept in a cold store but it is worth doing if you love this sculptural plant. 
  • Try planting with bulbs that flower at the same time, Acidanthera, Agapanthus or Ligularia
