Who can resist Asters? In the late summer and early autumn they bring much needed colour with their daisy-like flowers. Asters, also called Michaelmas Daises, are also perfect perennial plants for cutting.

Aster Monch has lilac flowers which can appear as early as July. Plant it with Andenken An Alma Potschke which has magenta flowers for a combination to provide flowers well in to autumn. Add in some bright lime green foliage from Euphorbia, Hostas or Ferns to lift the deep green leaves.

What is a perennial aster?

Perennial asters are a group of flowering plants that are known for their vibrant colours and daisy-like appearance. The term perennial means that, once aster bulbs are planted, they will grace your garden for years to come. What sets an aster above other perennials is that it blooms profusely from late summer into autumn when many other flowers have finished their bloom. Aside from their late bloom, asters produce striking flowers like pink, purple, blue and white, with a characteristic yellow center, making them popular with gardeners and pollinators like bees and butterflies.

How to plant and care for perennial asters

To get the most out of asters, consider these tips:

  • Asters flourish in areas that offer full sun to partial shade, receiving at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily
  • Plant in well-draining soil
  • Set perennial aster plants 40-50cm apart to ensure ample room for growth. The top of the root ball should be level with the soil surface when planting.
  • Consider planting asters alongside ferns, hostas or euphorbia.
  • Water newly planted asters deeply to encourage root development. Once established, they are relatively drought tolerant.
  • Fertilise asters in the early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and flower production.
  • To promote bushy growth and more flowers, pinch back the tips of the plants in early summer. Cut back old foliage in late fall to maintain plant health.
  • Apply appropriate, environmentally friendly pest and disease treatments as needed.
