What is a hosta plant?

Hostas are the backbone of any garden providing striking foliage from deep green to grey-blue. They're widely in the gardening community due to their low-maintenance, perennial nature, meaning that they will return year after year once planted. These hardy plants boast a robust root system and dense, leafy foliage that present in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes.

Hosta leaves can range from vibrant greens to deep blues, with some varieties featuring unique patterns that add visual interest.

How to plant and care for hosta bulbs

To get the most out of hostas, consider these tips:

  • Plant hosta bulbs in the spring when the temperatures are cool
  • The plants should be planted so the top is approximately 2cm below the soil surface
  • Smaller varieties can be spaced around 30cm apart, while larger varieties should have 60cm of space to flourish
  • Plant enough hosta plants to fill the space once they reach full size. For example, larger hosta varieties that grow to about 3 feet wide should be planted individually with room to expand
  • Consider planting hostas with tulips and alliums where their bold leaves hide the fading foliage.
  • If planting around multiple plants, limit the group to three or fewer for smaller varieties to avoid overcrowding

Hostas are notorious for being eaten by slugs and snails. It is important to protect smaller plants or young plants. Use copper rings or thorny branches around the perimeter of the plants.

Once they have established hostas will cope better with slug attacks. Consider planting in a position that is far from a good hiding place for slugs.
