Peonies (or paeonies) are perennial plants that are exotic and showy. The “Here I am Flowers” are a favourite with gardeners with their lovely foiliage and stunning flowers. Peonies are excellent as cut flowers. The leaves are deeply cut and last a long time after the flowers have faded.

Other Plants that go well with peonies are baptisia, veronica, iris, and nepeta which all sport vertical flowers that help break up the roundness of the peonies. Geraniums are also a great option as they will grow prettily through the leaves.

Peonies (or paeonies) are perennial plants that are worth time and investment. Although they may be slow to start, these large billowing flowers will multiply year after year. The bigger the plant the more flowers it will grow (provided it is in a sunny position).

The “Here I am Flowers” are a favourite with gardeners with their lovely foiliage and stunning flowers. Peonies are excellent as cut flowers.

The leaves are deeply cut and last a long time after the flowers have faded. They work well as an architectural element in the garden, covering an area of up to 1 meter once fully mature.

They divide beautifully, giving more plants every 3-4 years.

How to plant peony plants

  • Peonies are hardy and want to be planted as soon as you receive them
  • When you receive your peonies you will see one or more nodes or shoots growing from the root. Place the root in a hole with the shoots pointing upwards and cover over
  • Position in a sunny place
  • Plant 10-15cm deep in rich but well draining soil
  • Use lots of organic matter
  • Fertilse once they are planted
  • Cut flower stalks down to the base after flowering is complete
  • Provide them with full sun, good air circulation, and support for the heavy blooms. Water them regularly but avoid waterlogged soil
  • Peonies can be left in the ground. You do not need to store them over winter

When do peonies bloom?

Peonies typically bloom in late spring to early summer, depending on the variety and local climate. the flowers are quite short lived at around 5 days. To extend the flowering time cut the flowers just as colour is emerging from the bud

Why are my peonies not blooming?

Lack of sunlight, improper planting depth, or overcrowded plants can contribute to a lack of blooms. Ensure they have adequate sunlight and space.

How to divide peonies

Divide peonies in autumn by digging up the entire clump, cutting it into sections with at least three to five eyes per division, and replanting.

How to deadhead peonies

Deadhead peonies by removing spent flowers just below the base of the bloom to encourage more energy for new growth.

How to prevent peony diseases?

Provide good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and remove any infected foliage promptly to prevent diseases like botrytis and powdery mildew.

Can I grow peonies in pots?

While it's possible, it's not ideal. Peonies prefer to be planted in the ground, and containerized peonies may not thrive as well.
