Crocosmia have fabulous arching stems with tubular starry blooms. Interestingly, although they derive from the sunny climes of South Africa, they are fully hardy. Crocosmia are ideal for the back of the border and produce exotic cut flowers.

They flower from July to September and tend to reach heights of between 35 and 60 cm.

Crocosmia corms are a stunning addition to difficult areas of your garden that promises a riot of vibrant blooms on arching stems. These are tough little bulbs that provide a lot of ground coverage with their abundant swordlike foliage.

Many of the most popular varieties were cultivated in the UK during the 50s. They are characterised by their hot red, orange and yellow colours. The flowers open up in a triangular fashion towards the tip of the stem giving you a prolonged flowering time.

How to plant crocosmia corms

  • Choose a spot with full sunlight to partial shade. Crocosmia thrives in well-drained soil but adapts well to various soil types.
  • Plant the bulbs about 8cm deep, placing them pointed end up. Allow at least 15cm of space between bulbs to accommodate their mature size.
  • Enhance the soil with organic matter to ensure good drainage. Crocosmia bulbs appreciate slightly acidic to neutral soil conditions.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season. While they tolerate short periods of drought, regular watering encourages optimal growth and flowering.
  • The foliage can be quite dense so try not to plant other bulbs in with your crocosmia.

How to care for Crocosmia corms

  • Mulch around the plants to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate temperature. This is particularly beneficial in colder climates.
  • Every 3-4 years, divide overcrowded clumps to rejuvenate the plants and enhance flowering. This is best done in the spring.
  • They will be fine to leave in the ground over winter

Are Crocosmia Bulbs deer-resistant?

Crocosmia is generally considered deer-resistant due to its bitter taste and tough texture.

Can Crocosmia be grown in containers?

It is a good idea if you don’t want the bulbs to spread. Plant Crocosmia bulbs in containers with well-draining soil. Ensure the containers receive ample sunlight for optimal growth.

Do Crocosmia attract pollinators?

Crocosmia's vibrant, tubular flowers are a magnet for hoverflies and butterflies, adding an extra layer of allure to your garden.

When is the best time to plant Crocosmia Bulbs?

Plant Crocosmia bulbs in the spring after the danger of frost has passed. This allows them to establish and produce spectacular blooms in late summer.
