Description

Apeldoorn is a wonderful, scarlet tulip that looks stunning planted with Golden Apeldoorn

The Tulip Apeldoorn is a hugely popular bulb. If you see a large bright red tulip, chances are it’s Apeldoorn. Easily identifiable by its superior size and telling black star at the centre of the cup, adorned with a yellow rim.

Darwin Hybrid tulip bulbs are the largest tulips flowers you can buy. The petals are individually 10cm long. Consider 6 of these large petals opening wide during the day, performing dinner-plate sized displays in the spring sun.

Tulips react to sunlight in this way and close tight to protect themselves during cold or rainy spells.

Are Darwin Hybrid Tulips Perennial?

Tulip bulbs are not truly perennial, but Darwin Hybrids such as Apeldoorn are more likely to reflower for a number of years.

  • Remove the flower heads once the tulips have finished flowering
  • Let the foliage turn brown before lifting
  • Once the leaves have turned brown, lift the tulips and remove any small bulblets.
  • Store the tulips over summer in a cool and well ventilated space
  • Replant the bigger bulbs in Autumn

A Darwin Hybrid Tulip bulb is a blend of Single Early and Emperor tulips. Lending their early flowering, and large single cup characteristics to this group. First developed in the 1950s, you’ll find many Darwins in our Heirloom collections. A testament to their longevity.
