Thalictrums or meadow rues are charming plants producing aquilegia-like foliage from which protrude masses of delicate, graceful flowers on tall, slender stems. Ideal for the back of the wild or woodland border, these quiet, mystical hardy perennials mostly found in the temperate, often mountainous regions of the Northern Hemisphere will make fantastic background plants. Try interlacing with grasses such as eupatoriums Rugosum Chocolate and miscanthuses or mix with other perennial plants like Japanese anemones Honorine Jobert/Konigi Charlotte, astrantias, echinaceas, nepetas or salvias.
Plant in moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade. Stake as needed.
Thalictrums are supplied in 9 cm pots. Unpack on arrival and store in a cool place until ready to plant.
Potential problems, pests and diseases:
Generally, thalictrums do not suffer from any serious diseases or pest problems. However, they can be affected by powdery mildews in dry conditions. Snails and slugs can be also an issue as they enjoy eating their foliage. To avoid this, provide protection.
