Iris Bulbs

When to Plant Iris Bulbs

Plant irises from July to September. This gives enough time for the roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant Iris Bulbs

Irises bloom best in full sunshine, although they can tolerate half a day of sun. If starved of sunlight they’ll fail to flower

Iris bulbs require fertile soil that is natural to slightly acidic and has good drainage all year round.

The Iris family is a diverse group of flowering bulbs. Within this group we have a range of species iris bulbs and taller ‘Dutch Iris’. Originating from various regions, including Europe, Asia, and North America, these perennial plants have captivated gardeners for centuries with their stunning blooms and unique structures.

Iris bulbs typically prefer well-drained soil and a sunny location, although some species tolerate partial shade. They're not overly finicky, but they do appreciate slightly acidic soil that isn't waterlogged to prevent bulb rot. These bulbs are resilient and can adapt to different climates, making them a versatile choice for various garden settings.

Planting Iris bulbs

When it comes to planting Iris bulbs, timing is key. The best time to plant them is usually in late summer or early fall, allowing the bulbs to establish roots before the winter chill sets in. The planting depth varies depending on the species, but a general rule of thumb is to plant them about twice as deep as the bulb's height. Be sure to space the bulbs adequately to allow for proper air circulation.

Some growers soak the bulbs in cold water for 24 hours before planting but its not essential.

Iris bulbs are also known for their rhizomatous or bulbous structures, each contributing to the growth and development of the plant. The rhizomatous varieties, such as Bearded Irises, should be planted with the rhizome near the soil surface, while bulbous Irises are typically buried at a greater depth.

Caring for Iris bulbs involves regular watering, especially during dry periods, and a balanced fertilizer application in the spring to support healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Mulching around the plants can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Will Iris flower year after year?

Species Iris are more reliable at flowering. Dutch Iris can often come up blind the following year if they are not getting enough light.

They are hardy bulbs and can tolerate cold temperatures.

  • Species Iris are small and early flowering
  • Dutch Iris are tall (50 cm) and flower in late spring early summer.
