A collectors favourite! Tulip Princess Irene has it all. Our gardens are never without it.
The orange and burgundy colours work in harmony with so many other tulips. It’s hard for these tulips to clash.
As a shorter tulip, pair with a slightly taller tulip to give you an eye catching container. Or place at the front of your beds.
How to cut tulips
An early tulip on a relatively short stem, but long enough to use for cutting.
- Lift the bulb from the ground to give you access to the full stem length.
- Cut the flower just as the bud is turning from green to orange. This extends the flowering time. It is also nice to see how the colours develop.
- Remove all but the top few leaves to prevent your vase getting crowded.
How to plant tulip bulbs
- Tulips require well draining soil and not too much water over winter.
- Add grit if you soil is very heavy
- Plant in Autumn - preferably in November in cooler ground
- Tulips need 8 weeks of cold weather before they start growing in spring.
- Water regularly once the shoots appear in spring
- Once flowered, remove the flower heads to promote growth for next year. Or lift whilst they are easy to find (tulips can struggle to flower year after year).
