Our Green Credentials
At Peter Nyssen, we’re passionate about plants and the planet, and we like to think we’re doing our bit to make a positive impact. As flower bulb specialists with over 60 years of experience, we know that growing a diverse range of plants is essential for supporting our environment. That’s why we’re committed to providing plants that are not only well-suited to our climate but also beneficial for your garden.
Healthy bulbs
One thing we’re particularly proud of is that bulbs in Holland don’t use neonicotinoids—a nasty pesticide that’s been linked to the decline of many pollinators. Plus, many of the modern bulbs we offer have been cultivated to reduce the need for fertilisers and pesticides, ensuring that we’re planting for the future in a sustainable way.
Our Warehouse
Our green efforts don’t stop at the plants. Our warehouse invested in solar panels in 2023, providing clean energy to pack your bulbs. We also encourage our team to cycle to work, and while cycling is second nature to our Dutch colleagues, we’re thrilled to see more of our team getting on their bikes.
Stef and Claire's Tree Project
We’re also working on a fantastic project in Bath, where we’re developing natural food crops, grassland habitats, and native plants. So far, we’ve planted over 500 trees on 9 acres of land—and we’re just getting started! If you’re curious, you can read more about it here.
Packaging
When it comes to packaging, we’ve made some thoughtful choices. Our packaging is now made from recycled plastic, which can also be widely recycled. We previously led the industry in using a wonderful biodegradable plastic product made from waste potato starch. Unfortunately, this product is no longer available and all the suitable replacements contain microplastics which pollute the soil on decomposition —a compromise we weren’t willing to make. We’re looking out for a new supplier of a similar product but in the meantime, the lowest impact product we can source is fully post consumer recycled plastic. We also use recycled paper for our cardboard boxes and printed materials, although we’re aware that paper production isn’t without its environmental impact and try to minimise the amount of paper we use.
We know we’re not perfect, and there’s always more to be done. But we’re committed to making improvements, one step at a time. We’d love for you to join us on this journey as we explore realistic, sustainable alternatives in our industry.
We’re always open to discussion and eager to hear new ideas. Together, we can make a difference!
