When to Plant Hyacinth Bulbs

Hyacinth bulbs can be planted in borders and pots from early autumn for spring flowering in March and April.

Where to Plant Hyacinth Bulbs

Hyacinths grow well in most areas of the garden and will make great additions to your borders and containers. We’d recommend planting them close to paths and doors to make the most of their perfume.

As with most bulbs, hyacinth bulbs, prefer well drained soil with plenty of sun. They can grow in shady areas, but their blooms will be poorer in subsequent years.

Hyacinth Bulbs are a fascinating bulb that require a closer look. Originating from the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, these bulbs boast a rich history. Known for their ability to force indoors and their wonderful sweet scent.

How to plant hyacinth bulbs

Planting these big bulbs is the same as any other bulb. Plant 15cm deep in good soil that allows water to drain away. A sunny position is preferable.

Plant hyacinth bulbs in autumn between September and November.

To plant in doors you will want our prepared bulbs, heat treated to give them a head start for christmas. Plant them in a pot with the point of the bulb just at the surface of the soil. Water regularly.

You can even place the bulb in just water in a special hyacinth vase. Provided the base plate is kept wet and the rest of the bulbs stays out of the water a flower will grow.

Caring for hyacinths

Hyacinths are low-maintenance companions that reward your care with stunning spikes filled with highly pigmented flowers. The soil should be kept moist during the spring.

You will only get one stem per bulb.

An injection of pure colour:

These bulbs are versatile, perfect for beds, borders, or containers. Create a visual symphony by planting them in clusters or mix them with other spring-blooming beauties for a dazzling display of colors. Hyacinths also make excellent companions for daffodils and tulips, providing a harmonious blend of textures and hues in your garden.

Do hyacinths come back each year?

For a couple of years hyacinths can come back provided the bulbs can put on enough size. A hyacinth bulb has lots of flowers to produce so it needs a lot of energy. After a few years the bulb can get tired and you will have to replace them.

What to do once hyacinths have finished flowering

As soon as the flowers start to die back cut the flower spike off and leave the foliage to feed the bulb.

If you have planted the bulbs indoors, take the plant outside and leave in a sunny position. Let the foliage die back naturally.

The bulbs can be lifted, dried and stored for next autumn.

Hyacinth bulbs require lots of work to bring them to your garden. To propagate the bulbs the basal plate is scooped out. This encourages many small bulbs to form around the base of the bulb. These little bulbs are then grown on.

To plant them in the fields of the Netherlands, every bulb has to be stood upright. This can only be done by hand!

Plus, the dust of the hyacinth is very itchy. Small hook-like dust irritates the skin. Don’t scratch it, it will make it worse! We know from experience.
