Grasses

Grasses are not just decorative they bring a new dimension to the garden! In the light summer breeze they bring movement to a static border and add a tranquil rustle.

Instead of cutting back the fading stems, leave them in for winter decoration. They look wonderful covered in thick winter frosts. In addition, the dying foliage can harbour insects which act as a food source for wildlife will love when there is little food around. Birds will also like the dry leaves and stems that the grasses provide which can offer them dry shelter the harsher months.

Grasses work well when planted with perennials such Achillea, Helenium, Rudbeckia, Thalictrum or with bulbs such as Camassia and Allium.
