Aquilegia Plants
Aquilegia (or Granny's Bonnet) are easy to grow perennial plants that are happiest in the shadier spots of your garden. That said, they will tolerate sun and are drought tolerant. They have attractive ferny foliage that appears in early spring and bear spikes of abundant flowers.
Aquilegia work well planted with tall grasses. These perennial plants are happy in any garden environment from the cottage to the modern setting.
What is an aquilegia plant?
Aquilegia (or Granny's Bonnet) are easy to grow perennial plants that have attractive ferny foliage that appears in early spring and bear spikes of pink, blue, purple or white bonnet-shaped flowers, depending on the variety. Aquilegia are known for their delicate appearance and attractiveness to pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.

How to plant and care for aquilegia plants
To get the most out of your aquilegia plant, consider these tips:
- Choose a location with well-drained soil and partial shade.
- Plant the roots in early spring.
- Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart to allow for adequate air circulation.
- Place the root with the growing point up, into a hole in the ground. Cover with 5 cm of soil or compost.
- Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply when the soil feels dry.
- Use a balanced fertiliser when new growth appears and again after flowering.
- Remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
- Cut back foliage after flowering to promote new growth and prevent disease.
- Like most perennials, aquilegia plants will benefit from being lifted and split every few years in early spring to rejuvenate plants.
- Aquilegia work well when planted towards the back of a border with tall grasses.
