What is a perennial plant?
Perennial plants are plants that come up year after year. They could be woody shrubs, leafy plants or they can even be bulbs.
They are usually hardy, which means they can withstand winter conditions. If you are looking for a low maintenance garden, hardy perennial plants are a great start.
In this category we have a selection of plants for sale in 9cm pots. Unlike bulbs these plants store their energy in their root system. The majority of the plants will die back over winter to ground level whilst the roots lay dormant until spring.
Do hardy perennials flower all year?
Some plants will produce flowers throughout the summer, and others will only have a flowering period of a month. You can use our flowering time filter to find a range of plants that will keep your garden in bloom from early summer to winter.
When to plant perennials
It is best to plant them whilst they are dormant during autumn or spring.
This is also a good time to divide existing hardy perennials into smaller plants. This helps the plant stay healthy and gives you more plants to use around the garden.

What should I do with perennials in winter?
Many perennials store their energy in their roots over winter. Softer foliage will die right back to the soil level. You can cut brown stems down to ground level to keep the plants fresh and encourage new growth.
Woody perennials like lavender need to be cut back. Only cut the fleshy stems rather than cutting into older wood, they won't recover from hard pruning.
