What are digitalis?

Digitalis, otherwise known as foxgloves, add a striking feature in many gardens, enhancing their woodland charm. These perennials are well-known for their tall spires that hold tubular floral bells, making them a popular plant for the back of a border. Their striking flowers produce an array of delicate colours, though the Foxy Hybrids are noted for their more subdued, pastel hues.

At the end of summer you will be left with an abundance of seeds which are easy to grow on for the next year. Digitalis look great when they are left to naturalise. Their foliage is evergreen and has a simlar appearance to cabbage leaves.

Due to their enchanting appearance and attractive colours, foxgloves are extremely popular amongst pollinators like bees. However, they are toxic if consumed, so care must be taken if they are being planted in a household with pets.

How to plant and care for perennial digitalis

To get the most out of these your foxgloves, consider these tips:

  • Plant foxgloves bulbs in a location with moderate shade to protect them from intense heat
  • Plant in moist, well-drained soil
  • Space digitalis 30-50cm apart from other plants to allow for air circulation to prevent disease
  • Plant the crown of the plant level with the soil surface
  • Consider planting with nepeta, alchemilla and achillea
  • Apply a general-purpose fertiliser once in spring as new growth appears
  • Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage a second bloom
