Acidanthera (Callianthus or Murielae) are a gladioli-type flower that are perfect for planting in a garden border or container. They are sweetly scented and have open faced star type flowers with a lovely deep carmine purple blotch in the centre. While they strongly resemble a classic gladioli, they are somewhat smaller.

Acidanthera are produced from Gladioli Corms and are members of the Gladioli family

There is a unique elegance to Acidanthera Gladiolus Callianthus Murielae, also known as the fragrant Abyssinian Sword Lily. These bulbs, revered for their exquisite white blooms and captivating fragrance, are a must-have for any flower enthusiast. The top petals fold forward like a hood over the burgundy star shaped throat. A gladioli-type flower that are perfect for planting in a garden border or container. They are sweetly scented and have open faced star type flowers with a lovely deep carmine purple blotch in the centre. While they strongly resemble a classic gladioli, they are somewhat smaller.

Each bulb will produce 2-3 flowers to a stem. They make a great accompaniment to other late summer flowering bulbs such as begonias agapanthus or amaryllis belladonna.

We say; ‘ One of our favourite bulbs for late summer. They are cheap bulbs that can be dotted around the garden. I often forget where I’ve planted them and I’m always pleasantly surprised when they come into flower’

How to Grow Acidanthera

  • Select a well-drained area with full to partial sunlight for planting. These bulbs thrive in sunlight and need good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
  • Dig a hole about 10cm deep, placing the bulb with the pointed end facing upward. Space the bulbs approximately 10 cm apart to allow proper growth and airflow.
  • Ensure the soil is enriched with organic matter and has good drainage. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is ideal.
  • Water the bulbs moderately after planting to settle the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the growing season.

Care Tips for Acidanthera

  • Provide a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer when shoots emerge and during the flowering season.
  • Remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming. This also directs the plant's energy back into bulb development.
  • In colder climates, where the bulbs are not winter hardy, dig them up after the foliage has died back in fall. Store the bulbs in a cool, dry place until the next planting season.
