It’s not too difficult to transform your garden for the summer using Peter Nyssen’s exquisite range of summer flowering bulbs.

Miscellaneous is not the best term to describe these wonderful bulbs but it is something we have done in the bulb industry for generations! Our collection of bulbs features an array of stunning varieties, including vibrant crocosmia, exotic callas, elegant crinum, and unique eucomis. These bulbs are perfect for adding colour, texture, and fragrance to your borders, containers, or cutting gardens.

Summer flowering bulbs are easy to grow and provide long-lasting blooms throughout the warmer months. Many of these bulbs are hardy unlike dahlias or gladioli, you can leave them in the ground for a perennial summer.

We recommend

Resident Peter Nyssen gardener Stephen Teeuw explains some of his favourite bulbs to plant in spring for summer flowering.:

  1. Calla- A semi hardy flower that sits as well in pots as well as it does in the borders. Colourful spathes stand majestic amongst long lasting tropical green foliage.

  2. Gloriosa – A climbing heat loving plant, often best reserved for a green house, but can be extremely successful in a hot summer. Unbelievable tropical flowers adorn these long reaching stems.

  3. Nerines– The last flower standing in autumn, and some of the brightest pinks youl see. Tall, allium like stems hold these trumpet flowers aloft, making them excellent cut flowers.

What are the best summer-flowering bulbs?

Our most popular bulbs are Lilies, gladiloi and begonias. But you can also look at dahlia tubers for big bushy plants or hardy perennials for low maintenance plants.

With such a broad range of bright and colourful flowers you are spoilt for choice. Consider the conditions of your garden and what you want to achieve. Use our filters to find the perfect plants for your garden

When should I plant summer-flowering bulbs?

Summer-flowering bulbs are typically planted in spring, after the last frost date when the soil has warmed up. This is usually between March and May, depending on your climate zone. A lot of summer flowering plants are from hotter climates and dont like the cold. It also means you might have to lift them to save them over winter.

How do I care for summer-flowering bulbs?

  • Ensure well-draining soil and proper depth (usually 2-3 times the bulb's height).

  • Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

  • Use a balanced fertilizer during planting and mid-season.

  • Most summer bulbs need full sun (6+ hours daily).

  • Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms.

  • In colder climates, dig up tender bulbs (like dahlias) and store them indoors over winter.

Can summer-flowering bulbs grow in pots?

Many summer-flowering bulbs thrive in containers. Use well-draining soil, ensure the pot has drainage holes, and water regularly. Bulbs like begonias, and lilies are excellent for pots.

Do summer-flowering bulbs come back every year?

Most bulbs and plants are perennial but are reliant on how they are stored over winter. Dahlias for example can flourish when left in the ground but a hard frost will kill the tuber. If you live somewhere warm they are more likely to return. Like dahlias, many summer bulbs will need to be stored in a dry and frost free environment whilst they are dormant over winter ready for planting next year.

What are the longest-blooming summer bulbs?

For prolonged blooms choose a plant such as dahlia, or many of our perennials that will produce lots of flowers across summer. So although e flowers may only last a couple of weeks, more will come in their place if you head head. Asters, Gaura and anemones are great for this.

Can I plant summer-flowering bulbs in summer?

It’s too late to plant most summer-flowering bulbs in summer, as they need time to establish roots and grow. However, you can plant pre-grown bulbs or container plants for instant colour.

What are the most fragrant summer-flowering bulbs?

Fragrant summer bulbs include: Oriental lilies and trumpet lilies, Freesias, Tulbaghia, some peonies and phlox varieties are scented bulbs you can grow.
